Turpentine will certainly do the job, that is what professionals use as a base for wax polish its ideal but that’s the expensive way. I would use White Spirit but only because its cheaper. I use it on my pine table and it does the job fine albeit that it does not smell so nice. Just make sure you do it in a well ventilated area as as both solvents are flammable.
